Smokehouse Specialties at Southend Brewery downtown Charleston SC

Posted in: Bar, Dining, Local
  |  by: Southend

Smokehouse specialties at Southend Brewery in downtown Charleston SC are perfect for lunch or dinner.  When Chef Garrett Priester updated the menu earlier this summer, his goal was to incorporate the great Southend smokehouse flavor into more of the main entrees.  The result? Nine dishes that are full-flavored, distinct and perfectly smokey.

While local favorites Uncle Gerry’s Meatloaf and Hickory Smoked Danish Ribs (pictured above) remain on the menu, the other entrees are new or prepared in a new way.

SOUTHEND’S SMOKEHOUSE ENTREES

Smokehouse Platter

It is easy to see why this platter is one of the most popular dishes on our menu.  A smorgasbord of smokehouse favorites, the platter features generous portions of pulled pork, beef brisket, ribs, BBQ baked beans, mac and cheese and slaw.

Hickory Smoked Danish Ribs

Smothered in Smokey BBQ sauce and served with fries and slaw, our ribs have been one of the most beloved items on our menu for years.

Beef Brisket

Our Beef Brisket is served with wood fired apple hash, green beans and apple cider BBQ sauce.

Uncle Gerry’s Meatloaf

It’s so good, it’s practically legendary in Charleston! We’ve had guests tell us they’ve traveled from miles away just to eat this great dish.  Served with mac and cheese, collard greens and smoked ketchup, Uncle Gerry’s Meatloaf is Southern comfort food at it’s best.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken

Another Southern classic, our fried chicken is served with brown gravy, collard greens and mac and cheese.

Smoked Chicken Cappelini

The great smokey flavor compliments all the flavors of this dish.  Prepared with prosciutto, tomatoes, artichoke hearts, garlic, shallots, Asiago and basil, our Smoked Chicken Cappelini is a delicious pasta dish.

Butternut Squash Ravioli

Brown butter, Asiago and bacon give this delicious pasta dish a wonderful flavor.

C.A.B. 10 oz. Sirloin Filet

There really is nothing quite like a smokehouse filet!  Always a popular dish at Southend, the filet comes with garlic mashed potatoes, green beans, demi-glace and crispy shallots.

We invite you to Southend Brewery & Smokehouse to try out our new smokehouse entrees.  We’d love to know which is your favorite!

One of the best firework displays in the Lowcountry is across the Charleston Harbor in Mt. On Friday night, we unwind at bit at Southend with the light contemporary jazz of The Mike Quinn Trio.   The band takes to the Southend stage at 6:30 p.m. providing soothing sounds throughout dinner.  Chef Garrett Priester has added amazing new entrees to our dinner menu that you have to try including Pan Roasted Grouper (wild mushroom pirlau, crispy fried calamari) and C.A.B. 10 oz Sirloin Filet (garlic mashed potatoes, green beans, demi-glaze, crispy shallots).

New Seasonal Beer at Southend Brewery

Posted in: Bar, Brewing, Local, Uncategorized
  |  by: Southend

Perfect for Spring, there’s a new seasonal beer on tap at Southend Brewery & Smokehouse in downtown Charleston SC. Brewmaster Ahren Warf has just crafted the Rye Citra Pale Ale which has been flowing very nicely with the beer crowd in Charleston.

The Rye Citra Pale Ale is named for the hop (Citra) used during both the brewing process and the dry hopping.  An amber-colored beer with 6.0% a.b.v., the new seasonal brew has a pronounced rye flavor and is as hoppy as an IPA. A great beer to sip on its own by the pint or pitcher, the Rye Citra Pale Ale also goes great with the expanded pub food menu at Southend.

Like  all of our signature microbrews, the Rye Citra Pale Ale is locally crafted and brewed right here on site. Beer lovers will appreciate the meticulous brewing  process that goes into every one of our beers.  Learn more about Southend’s beer here.

Although our seasonal beer offering changes every few weeks, Southend offers five handcrafted beers that remain on tap all year-long:

LOVE ME TWO TIMES BLONDE: Our signature ale, almost musical, golden, smooth and light. Its subtle hop finish will leave you feeling refreshed and begging for more.

WATCH IT GROW WHEAT: Ice cold, smooth and unfiltered, with a hint of citrus and summer. Float an orange slice in your glass and savor this light bodied ale like a long summer day.

CASTLE PINCKNEY PALE ALE: Conquer your thirst with this medium bodied, copper colored ale. Your taste buds will surrender with just one sip of this full flavored, hoppy brew.

RIP TIDE RED: An American, full flavored microbrew in its finest form. This medium bodied, ruby red beer will swallow up your taste buds like a wave from Folly Beach.

PICT’S STOUT: A round, roasted, full-bodied brew, unearthed from medieval Scotland. Enjoy this dark, silky stout and its perfect blend of flaked oats and eight varieties of malted barley.

Enjoy Southend signature brews by the pint, pitcher, growler or try them all with our sampler tray.  Southend Brewery is open daily from 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 a.m. with Happy Hour Sunday through Thursday from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

See you soon!

Oktoberfest Favorites at Southend Brewery | Beer Charleston SC

Posted in: Bar, Brewing, Dining, Local
  |  by: Southend

Southend Brewery, beer charleston south carolina, celebrates Oktoberfest all month long! With a seasonal brew handcrafted by our resident brewmaster and an unbelievable specialty dish created by our new chef, Southend Brewery is the place to indulge in Fall favorites.

The first Oktoberfest was held back in 1810 in Munich, Germany as a celebration of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria’s engagement.  The celebration lasted for 16 days and provided the best local beer and brats to all residents of the village.  In the spirit of the original Oktoberfest, Southend Brewery says let the beer flow…for days on end!

With a nod to our Bavarian friends, our new seasonal brew is Autumn Brown Ale.  Available for only a few more weeks, it is not to be missed! It is brown ale made with toasted oats, Belgian candied sugar, malt and spices of cinnamon, clove, allspice and hopped with German Tettnanger hops.

What goes better with a great brown ale than the perfect brats dish?

Inspired by the great signature beer found in our brewery, Chef Garrett Priester has created the mouth-watering special, Brewmaster Brats.

Introduced during Charleston Restaurant Week, this dish has quickly become a favorite at Southend.  Featuring local Keegan-Filion Farms Carolina Garlic Brats, the dish is perfected with sautéed peppers and onions, sea salt baked potatoes and whole grain mustard aioli.  We know it sounds good and it definitely looks but wow, does it taste amazing!

We look forward to seeing you at Southend Brewery!  Bis Bald!

Meet Southend Brewery’s New Chef

Posted in: Bar, Brewing, Dining, Interviews, Local
  |  by: Southend

Southend Brewery Top Restaurant Charleston South Carolina welcomes new Chef, Garrett Priester.  A Lowcountry native, Priester brings his exceptional culinary talent and love for Charleston cuisine to the popular restaurant.

Originally from Beaufort, South Carolina, Chef Garrett Priester comes from a long line of great family cooks who valued fresh ingredients and an appreciation for Lowcountry cuisine. His paternal grandfather was a farmer in Hampton County and his maternal grandfather was a local shrimper who once owned restaurants himself.  Priester credits both his mother and grandmother for introducing him to his passion for fine Southern cooking.

Over the past 15 years, Priester honed his craft by attending the Culinary Institute of Charleston and training in some of the finest restaurant kitchens in Charleston.  Before leading the Southend culinary team, he was the sous chef at Amen Street Fish and Raw Bar, worked at the Saltus River Grill in Beaufort and an upscale restaurant on Seabrook Island. Priester’s culinary style is defined by Southern Gullah and French influences.  For Priester, the artistic presentation of each dish is just as important as the taste.  He said, “We eat with our eyes first.  When I’m creating a new dish, I visualize the finished product and then backtrack.”

Brew Master Brats created by Chef Priester and made with Keegan-Filion Farms Carolina garlic brats, sauteed peppers & onions, sea salt baked potatoes and whole grain mustard aioli

Priester plans to update the menu at Southend Brewery & Smokehouse to include more local ingredients and sustainable seafood from local purveyors.  Priester said, “I want the entire town reflected on the menu.  Charlestonians will appreciate and feel pride about the local influence in the dishes.  For tourists, I hope the menu will inspire them to learn more about the Lowcountry.  I want tourists to see, for example, an ingredient from a Johns Island Farm on the menu which will then encourage them to drive out and visit the farm and surrounding area.”

Longtime patrons of Southend Brewery can continue to expect their favorite classics such as pulled pork and brisquet on the menu, but Priester plans to introduce several new items over the next few months.  The new dishes will infuse the distinct brewery flavors of Southend’s signature beers and smokehouse feel such as Brew Master Brats made with local Keegan-Filion Carolina garlic brats. Priester’s excitement about the new menu was palpable, “There is no limit to what you can smoke-cook…seafood, pork, vegetables, absolutely anything.”

We can’t wait to sample all of Chef Priester’s fabulous creations!  Be sure to check our Chef’s Specials to see what is new this week.

New Beer at Southend Brewery, Charleston SC

Posted in: Bar, Brewing
  |  by: Southend

Summer is still in full swing at Southend Brewery in downtown Charleston SC…and we have the new seasonal beer to prove it!  Just in time for the Charleston Pub Crawl on August 18th, Brewmaster Ahren Warf has crafted the perfect Summer beer, a Citrus IPA. If you can’t wait until the weekend to have a sip, our new beer is on tap now. Come on in to our taproom and have a taste…you will not be disappointed!

A pale ale with an alcohol content 6.3%, the Citrus IPA is the perfect beer to enjoy with one of Southend’s great appetizers or menu entrees.  If you have a preference for orange and lemon with your hops, the Citrus IPA is definitely for you because when Ahren makes a citrus beer, he does not fool around.  He used 12 lbs…yes, 12!…of orange and lemon peel to create the Citrus IPA.  If you’re thinking that’s a whole lotta peel, here’s how its broken down in the brewing process: 4 lbs were used during the mashing process, 4 lbs in the boiling process, 2.5 lbs in the fermenter and 1.5 lbs in the serving tank.  Without a doubt, not only is there a lot of citrus, but there’s a lot of love in this new beer…

Whether you sip a sampler, grab a pint or fill  up a pitcher with the Citrus IPA or any of our signature brews, we promise the lazy, hazy days of Summer are still going strong inside our brewery.

Best Bar Food at Southend Brewery Charleston SC

  |  by: Southend

A great bar with great bar food in Charleston SC is easy to find at Southend Brewery & Smokehouse.  Let’s face it, there are times when you are just looking to grab a bite to eat at the bar while watching the game or catching up with friends.  Southend’s pub food menu has something for everyone whether you are looking for an appetizer that can easily double as a meal or just a little snack to enjoy before your dinner entrée.

Nachos - it’s a bar food classic and one that is easy to share with friends (if you want to, that is).  At Southend, we put our own twist on tradition but serving up our nachos Southwestern style. Piled high with chicken, black beans, pico de gallo, jalapenos and sour cream, our nachos are truly one of a kind in Charleston.

Sticking with classics, there’s nothing better to go with our signature beers than really great wings.  We’ve gotcha covered with our Smoked Jumbo Chicken Wings.  Choose which style you like – Smokey Hot Sauce or Spicy Rubbed – or go for a combo of both.  Either way, both are served with celery and a side of Ranch and are equally perfect!

If fresh seafood is more your style, we suggest our Lowcountry Lump Crab Cakes. Served with corn salad and fresh herb buerre blanc, you will most likely want to keep this delicious starter to yourself.  If you love seafood and have to share, you will want to consider our Shrimp & Crab Dip. Served warm with crispy corn tortilla chips perfect for dipping, this dip is by far one of our  most popular pub food selections.

No matter what appetizer you choose for noshing at our bar, there’s one thing for certain.  You will find the best beer in Charleston and the best cocktails to go along with it!

Charleston Bar Favorites: Summer Cocktails at Southend Brewery

Posted in: Bar, Dining, Party
  |  by: Southend

Hot Charleston SC summers and cool cocktails go hand in hand at the Southend Brewery and Smokehouse bar.  Although we are well-known for our signature handcrafted beers, Southend also has an impressive cocktail, martini and wine bar menu.  With our full bar and speciality drinks, it is easy to find a cocktail to go with your sense of Summer fun.  Here’s a few of our favorites at the Southend bar.

Let’s start with martinis…oh, the options that can be found in a martini!  You can’t go wrong with traditional such as a Manhattan Martini (Makers Mark, bitters, Sweet Vermouth, brandy soaked cherry) or a Presidential Martini (Grey Goose, splash of dry vermouth with a stuffed olive). But, if you enjoy a little more fruit with your martinis, then you will want to check out our Oui Oui Martini (Stoli Citros, raspberry liquor, champagne with a lemon twist) or Bellini Martini (Stoli Peachnik, champagne, peach juice, whipped cream).  Of course, the most popular fruity martini of all is probably the Apple Martini. Enjoyed any time of year, the Apple Martini is shaken with Stoli, Apple Schnapps and butterscotch liqueor. Look at that! Almost too pretty to drink…almost.

If you are looking to outfit your martini in Summer fun, you might want to sip on our Blue Dolphin martini (Stoli Bluberi, Peach Schnapps, Blue Curacao, splash of Sprite).  From it’s look to it’s taste, this martini easily puts you in a vacation state of mind! Go ahead, put your feet up with this one…

In the South, the quintessential Summer cocktail (well, let’s be honest, any time of year!), of course, involves sweet tea.  Our Peach Tea cocktail is just the right beverage to slowly sip while taking a break from the hot Charleston sun.  Whether you are enjoying our sidewalk seating or cooling off at one of our three bars inside, the Peach Tea cocktail might only be rivaled by our Summer Sangria.  Light and refreshing, our Summer Sangria (pictured left) is by one of our most popular cocktails.  We get many requests for the recipe, but for now we’re keeping it a secret.  However, you are more than welcome to come in and have a taste to see if you can decipher the ingredients.

If you still aren’t quite sure which cocktail suits your style, one of our bartenders are sure to set you up with the perfect beverage.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!  Cheers!

Southend Brewery’s Taproom, Charleston SC

Posted in: Bar, Brewing
  |  by: Southend

While there are many bars in Charleston, SC, there are few taprooms. At Southend Brewery, brewing our own beer is only half the fun – of course, drinking our beer in our taproom is the other half.

The core of Southend Brewery & Smokehouse is our signature beers.  Our brew tanks are rightfully on display in the center of our restaurant. Each distinct Southend microbrew is crafted in-house by the hands and creativity of our resident Brewmaster, Ahren Warf.   Being Brewmaster is both a job and a passion.  A second generation brewmaster, Ahren says, “It’s fulfilling, rewarding and fascinating, with an intricate level of chemistry and engineering involved.”

In 2010, Southend’s owner requested to “revamp” the beers, including name and formula, for a new taste at Southend Brewery.  This led to our five signature beers with one unique seasonal beer only available for a few weeks. Ahren comes up with the Southend seasonals, which is always a labor of love on his part. Previous seasonal brews have included an Unfiltered Blonde with Lemongrass and Ginger,  Juniper Rye, a Vanilla Wheat beer (vanilla, lemon peel and Belgian candied sugar); and the current, Honey Wheat.  Additionally, Southend welcomes guest beers to our beer board for even more variety.

Once the brewing process is complete, Ahren shares his creations in our taproom. More than just a bar, a taproom is a place for the true beer lover to gain the full experience of specialized handcrafted beer and discuss beer making with our bartenders, brewmaster and other customers.

Southend’s handcrafted microbrews include:

PICT’S STOUT: A round, roasted, full bodied brew, unearthed from medieval Scotland. Enjoy this dark, silky stout and its perfect blend of flaked oats and eight varieties of malted barley.

SEASONAL DRAUGHT: Straight from the Brewmaster’s dreams to our tap, a high gravity, full-bodied beer that’s always right for the season.

Beautiful Renovations at Southend Brewery, Downtown Charleston

Posted in: Art, Bar, Dining, Events, Party
  |  by: Southend

A historic treasure, the Wagener Building on East Bay Street in downtown Charleston SC is home to Southend Brewery & Smokehouse. One of the alluring features of the Wagener Building is found on the third floor in the aptly named the Wagener Room, a space primarily used as a venue for special events and parties.

If you’ve been to Southend Brewery lately, you may have noticed a few changes to our Wagener Room.  If you haven’t stopped by in a while, we welcome you to come in and see how we’ve renovated the third floor with a facelift that both revitalizes its historic charm and provides modern conveniences.

Whether you take the stairs or our glass elevator to the third floor, without a doubt, the first thing that will catch your eye is the beautiful original pine wood floors. The same floors where the first Wagener Building occupants stood in the early 1880′s, have been restored with a glossy, shiny luster that makes you want to glide across them!

One of the best places in town to soak in the gorgeous views of the Charleston harbor and downtown city life, the Wagener Room is one of the most popular places to be in our brewery. Guests can better enjoy that famous view while sitting at our new bar which is now situated in the northwest corner of the room.  A full bar framed in beautiful exposed brick walls, patrons will find all our signature Southend microbrews on tap, as well as, our speciality cocktail and complete food menus.

While at the bar or sitting at one of our new tables, it is easy to enjoy a game on one of our six new 47 inch flat screen televisions placed around the room.  If you’d rather play than sit, walk to the opposite side of the room to enjoy a game of pool at one of our billiard tables.

One of the most significant benefits of moving the bar was that it allowed us to expand our dining area.  We can now accommodate 100 seated people in the room which makes the Wagener Room an even better venue for hosting private parties such as bridal showers, corporate events or birthday celebrations.  Depending on the size of the party, Southend provides dining options from our main menu or from our extensive catering menus.

One of the upcoming special events planned at the brewery will occur during Spoleto when Southend hosts the oil paintings of local artist, Helen Duckworth.  The new paint color on the walls of our third floor room was chosen specifically to highlight and showcase both Ms. Duckworth’s art, as well as, future local artists.

We welcome you to come in and see the beautiful renovations on our third floor!  When a private event is not booked, The Wagener Room is open to the public for dining, pool and drinking Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.  and Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 2 a.m.

To book an event in the Wagener Room or in the Bobby Jones Room on the second floor, please contact Southend Brewery Event Coordinator, Jana Hodge at   or .

New Seasonal Beer at Southend in Downtown Charleston SC

Posted in: Bar, Brewing
  |  by: Southend

Looking for a new beer in downtown Charleston SC? Southend Brewery & Smokehouse has you covered with a new seasonal brew on tap – an Unfiltered Blonde with Lemongrass and Ginger. Let us just stop and tell you now, it’s gooood!

The new beer is unfiltered giving it a bit of a cloudy complexion, but don’t let that fool you.  It’s a definite blonde, light beer that is great for Spring and warmer weather. Brewmaster Ahren Warf says, “I prefer unfiltered beer because it has more character and is more dynamic.”  We’re definitely taking his word for it because Ahren knows his beer!

New Seasonal Beer

Made with East Kent Golding hops and Pilsner, Vienna and honey malts, the new Unfiltered Blonde is an easy, drinkable beer.  On the front of the palate, you will get the distinct ginger flavor while the finish draws out the lemongrass.  It’s perfectly blended without one flavor outshining the other.

The new Unfiltered Blonde is a versatile beer that is enjoyed on its own or with almost any Southend food menu item.  We suggest pairing it with wings, one of our famous brick oven pizzas or seafood dishes for dining and drinking perfection.

Brick oven pizza

We encourage you to come in soon to try out Southend’s latest addition as it won’t be around for long.  Our bartenders will be serving it on tap for about another week and a half before making room for Ahren’s next creation.  What will he brew up next?  Well, you’ll just have to wait and see…

Best Brick Oven Pizza Downtown Charleston SC

Posted in: Bar, Brewing, Dining
  |  by: Southend

What goes better with the best beer in Charleston, SC than the best pizza?  Southend Brewery & Smokehouse has the best of both worlds with our custom-crafted micro beers and brick oven pizzas.  All we can say is yummm…

Margherita Brick Oven Pizza

There is ordinary pizza then there’s brick oven pizza…and yes, there’s a big difference! We’ve sampled quite a bit of pizza in our time and can honestly say that Southend’s brick oven pizzas are cheesy, crispy pizza perfection.  Our menu offers many pizza options from classics such as pepperoni and sausage to culinary specialties like our Famous Smoked BBQ Chicken with fresh herbs and smoked gouda cheese.  Needless to say, there’s nothing ordinary about ‘em!

Smoked BBQ Chicken Pizza

What makes Southend Brewery & Smokehouse’s pizzas so, so good?

We use a true beehive style brick oven with a ceramic lining and wood-burning fire. Once the fire reaches the optimum temperature, the bricks store the heat then give it back by radiating the heat and cooking the food.  The result? An evenly cooked pizza.  The brick oven enhances the natural flavor of the ingredients while creating the crispy texture to the crust.

Southend's Wood Burning Brick Oven

At Southend, you will find our chef has put together some fantastic pizza menu items, but we also encourage you to come up with your own combination.  With over 20 different toppings to choose from, let your creativity run wild! You dream it, we’ll cook it to perfection.

Can it get any better?  Hmmm…add a pitcher of signature beers Love Me Two Times Blond or Rip Tide Red and we’d say oh, yes!

Pizza & Beer, A Happy Marriage

Best Beer & Pizza Charleston SC at Southend Brewery

Try our Charleston Best Beer & Pizza combinations. Delicious by themselves, but even better together. Southend’s microbrewed beer is the perfect beverage to wash down a slice of pizza, but it also serves a dual role in our pizza perfection.

The secret behind our delicious pizza dough is behind those infamous glass walls inside the restaurant. The magic ingredient in Southend Brewery’s pizza is the additional buzz of flavor from our homemade ale.  Years ago, we began adding Southend Ale to our pizza dough and found that when yeast from the dough and yeast from our beer met, there was perfection.

Adding beer to pizza dough in place of water gives the the crust a nice consistency. Ale makes pizza dough light and flaky and cooking the pizza in our wood-fired oven makes the flavors to soar to the surface. You have yourself a rich, delicious, authentic pizza, that’s never thick and chewy; but just right.

With years of testing pizza topping combinations behind us, we’ve found a few crowd favorites, including The Margherita (with fresh mozzarella and basil pesto), The Smoked BBQ Chicken Pizza, and a Meat Lovers Pizza (with pepperoni, sausage, roasted red pepper and goat cheese). If you can dream of something better, you can also create your own Southend Pizza. Choose a base of standard marinara or smoked tomato sauce, a choice of goat, mozzarella or cheddar-jack cheese and a variety of fresh veggies and smoked meats.

Enjoy it here with a Southend Ale or take it home with a full growler. Check out pictures and reviews of fellow Southend Pizza lovers on Foodspotted.

Southend Featuring Live Music in Downtown Charleston SC

Jimmy Fallon got himself a late night house band, and now we’ve got one, too. If you had the pleasure of hearing the sweet, live jazz sounds of the Charleston-based E.S.P. Trio this fall, you’ll be thrilled with this piece of news. Southend Brewery has invited the guys to be the official Southend Brewery house band.

With exception of just a few evenings this winter, the ESP Trio will play for Southend dinner and bar guests on Friday evenings. From 7-10 pm, the “Eclectic Soul Perspective” will take center stage and play some light contemporary jazz. Saxophonist Mike Quinn was a former Southend bartender, now returning to his old haunts this time joined by his pals, bass player David Grimm and drummer Jonathan Peace. The trio add some much-needed live music to the East Bay weekend bar scene.

When warmer temperatures make their way back to Charleston, we’ll open our floor-to-ceiling glass walls and let the music carry out to our outdoor seating.  In the meantime, come catch the guys inside on Southend Brewery’s first floor stage.

Grab a beer, microbrewed on site, create your own wood grilled pizza and get ready for a chill evening downtown.
