Smokehouse Specialties at Southend Brewery downtown Charleston SC

Posted in: Bar, Dining, Local
  |  by: Southend

Smokehouse specialties at Southend Brewery in downtown Charleston SC are perfect for lunch or dinner.  When Chef Garrett Priester updated the menu earlier this summer, his goal was to incorporate the great Southend smokehouse flavor into more of the main entrees.  The result? Nine dishes that are full-flavored, distinct and perfectly smokey.

While local favorites Uncle Gerry’s Meatloaf and Hickory Smoked Danish Ribs (pictured above) remain on the menu, the other entrees are new or prepared in a new way.

SOUTHEND’S SMOKEHOUSE ENTREES

Smokehouse Platter

It is easy to see why this platter is one of the most popular dishes on our menu.  A smorgasbord of smokehouse favorites, the platter features generous portions of pulled pork, beef brisket, ribs, BBQ baked beans, mac and cheese and slaw.

Hickory Smoked Danish Ribs

Smothered in Smokey BBQ sauce and served with fries and slaw, our ribs have been one of the most beloved items on our menu for years.

Beef Brisket

Our Beef Brisket is served with wood fired apple hash, green beans and apple cider BBQ sauce.

Uncle Gerry’s Meatloaf

It’s so good, it’s practically legendary in Charleston! We’ve had guests tell us they’ve traveled from miles away just to eat this great dish.  Served with mac and cheese, collard greens and smoked ketchup, Uncle Gerry’s Meatloaf is Southern comfort food at it’s best.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken

Another Southern classic, our fried chicken is served with brown gravy, collard greens and mac and cheese.

Smoked Chicken Cappelini

The great smokey flavor compliments all the flavors of this dish.  Prepared with prosciutto, tomatoes, artichoke hearts, garlic, shallots, Asiago and basil, our Smoked Chicken Cappelini is a delicious pasta dish.

Butternut Squash Ravioli

Brown butter, Asiago and bacon give this delicious pasta dish a wonderful flavor.

C.A.B. 10 oz. Sirloin Filet

There really is nothing quite like a smokehouse filet!  Always a popular dish at Southend, the filet comes with garlic mashed potatoes, green beans, demi-glace and crispy shallots.

We invite you to Southend Brewery & Smokehouse to try out our new smokehouse entrees.  We’d love to know which is your favorite!

  |  by: Southend

The local seafood dinner entrees at Southend Brewery & Smokehouse in Charleston, SC have been a big hit with our guests since our new menu was revealed earlier this summer.    With the amazing seafood available in our local waters, it was a culinary dream come true for our Executive Chef Garrett Priester to expand Southend’s Market Fresh Seafood selections on the menu.

If you are looking to enjoy the best of Charleston seafood, we invite you to Southend to enjoy one of these fabulous dishes:

Pan Roasted Grouper

One of the most popular new dishes on the entire menu, our Pan Roasted Grouper features wild mushroom pirlau and crispy fried collards.

Cast Iron Blackened Salmon

Our new salmon entree  is served with Gullah red rice, green beans and thyme buerre blanc.

Beer Battered Flounder

When you add Southend’s own signature beer to the batter, it can only be absolutely delicious!  A great new dish that is always spot on, our Beer Battered Flounder comes with fries, slaw, Lowcountry remoulade and malt vinegar.

Lump Blue Crab Cakes

A popular staple on the Southend menu for long time, we kept this entree the same.  It’s hard to improve upon crab cakes served with fried green tomatoes, corn relish and thyme buerre blanc!

Shrimp & Grits

It’s been called many times “Charleston’s Best Shrimp & Grits” by our guests and there’s a good reason why!  Chef Priester’s take on the Southern classic includes Tasso ham, slow roasted tomatoes and green onions.   Delicious!

New Sandwiches and Burgers at Southend Brewery & Smokehouse, Charleston SC

Posted in: Dining
  |  by: Southend

Lunch, late night or really, anytime, is the perfect time to try the new sandwiches and burgers at Southend Brewery & Smokehouse in Charleston, SC.  Chef Garrett Priester introduced our new menu in the beginning of the summer and based on feedback from our guests, the new sandwiches are a big hit!

As we all know, there truly is nothing like a really great juicy burger.  Now some people will say the bun makes all the difference while others say the toppings, but everyone agrees that the burger itself needs to be cooked to perfection.  We cover all the bases with our Old South Burger.  We take a half pound burger and top it with bacon, pimento cheese and a fried green tomato to deliver a burger that can only be found in the South.  Coming soon, we will offering our burgers with gluten-free buns so everyone can enjoy the full burger experience!

Our Smoked Chicken Salad Sandwich is exactly what you’d expect from a great smokehouse restaurant.  Served with lettuce and tomato on thick sliced toast, it is the easy go-to sandwich for lunch.

Another new sandwich that has been popular at both lunch and dinner is our Deviled Crab Cake Sandwich.  Served with lettuce, tomato, onion and Lowcountry remoulade, it is satisfying and delicious.

If you prefer vegetarian, then our Caprese is a must try.  With fresh mozzarella, vine ripe tomatoes, basil pesto and sweet balsamic served on foccacia bread, this artisan sandwich is full of flavor.

Of course, all of these great sandwiches and burgers pair perfectly with our signature handcrafted beers.  We invite you to come and taste them all for yourself.  Feel free to comment on our Facebook page to let us know what you think!

We look forward to seeing you soon at Southend Brewery & Smokehouse!

New Seasonal Beer at Southend Brewery

Posted in: Bar, Brewing, Local, Uncategorized
  |  by: Southend

Perfect for Spring, there’s a new seasonal beer on tap at Southend Brewery & Smokehouse in downtown Charleston SC. Brewmaster Ahren Warf has just crafted the Rye Citra Pale Ale which has been flowing very nicely with the beer crowd in Charleston.

The Rye Citra Pale Ale is named for the hop (Citra) used during both the brewing process and the dry hopping.  An amber-colored beer with 6.0% a.b.v., the new seasonal brew has a pronounced rye flavor and is as hoppy as an IPA. A great beer to sip on its own by the pint or pitcher, the Rye Citra Pale Ale also goes great with the expanded pub food menu at Southend.

Like  all of our signature microbrews, the Rye Citra Pale Ale is locally crafted and brewed right here on site. Beer lovers will appreciate the meticulous brewing  process that goes into every one of our beers.  Learn more about Southend’s beer here.

Although our seasonal beer offering changes every few weeks, Southend offers five handcrafted beers that remain on tap all year-long:

LOVE ME TWO TIMES BLONDE: Our signature ale, almost musical, golden, smooth and light. Its subtle hop finish will leave you feeling refreshed and begging for more.

WATCH IT GROW WHEAT: Ice cold, smooth and unfiltered, with a hint of citrus and summer. Float an orange slice in your glass and savor this light bodied ale like a long summer day.

CASTLE PINCKNEY PALE ALE: Conquer your thirst with this medium bodied, copper colored ale. Your taste buds will surrender with just one sip of this full flavored, hoppy brew.

RIP TIDE RED: An American, full flavored microbrew in its finest form. This medium bodied, ruby red beer will swallow up your taste buds like a wave from Folly Beach.

PICT’S STOUT: A round, roasted, full-bodied brew, unearthed from medieval Scotland. Enjoy this dark, silky stout and its perfect blend of flaked oats and eight varieties of malted barley.

Enjoy Southend signature brews by the pint, pitcher, growler or try them all with our sampler tray.  Southend Brewery is open daily from 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 a.m. with Happy Hour Sunday through Thursday from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Oktoberfest Favorites at Southend Brewery | Beer Charleston SC

Posted in: Bar, Brewing, Dining, Local
  |  by: Southend

Southend Brewery, beer charleston south carolina, celebrates Oktoberfest all month long! With a seasonal brew handcrafted by our resident brewmaster and an unbelievable specialty dish created by our new chef, Southend Brewery is the place to indulge in Fall favorites.

The first Oktoberfest was held back in 1810 in Munich, Germany as a celebration of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria’s engagement.  The celebration lasted for 16 days and provided the best local beer and brats to all residents of the village.  In the spirit of the original Oktoberfest, Southend Brewery says let the beer flow…for days on end!

With a nod to our Bavarian friends, our new seasonal brew is Autumn Brown Ale.  Available for only a few more weeks, it is not to be missed! It is brown ale made with toasted oats, Belgian candied sugar, malt and spices of cinnamon, clove, allspice and hopped with German Tettnanger hops.

What goes better with a great brown ale than the perfect brats dish?

Inspired by the great signature beer found in our brewery, Chef Garrett Priester has created the mouth-watering special, Brewmaster Brats.

Introduced during Charleston Restaurant Week, this dish has quickly become a favorite at Southend.  Featuring local Keegan-Filion Farms Carolina Garlic Brats, the dish is perfected with sautéed peppers and onions, sea salt baked potatoes and whole grain mustard aioli.  We know it sounds good and it definitely looks but wow, does it taste amazing!

We look forward to seeing you at Southend Brewery!  Bis Bald!

Meet Southend Brewery’s New Chef

Posted in: Bar, Brewing, Dining, Interviews, Local
  |  by: Southend

Southend Brewery Top Restaurant Charleston South Carolina welcomes new Chef, Garrett Priester.  A Lowcountry native, Priester brings his exceptional culinary talent and love for Charleston cuisine to the popular restaurant.

Originally from Beaufort, South Carolina, Chef Garrett Priester comes from a long line of great family cooks who valued fresh ingredients and an appreciation for Lowcountry cuisine. His paternal grandfather was a farmer in Hampton County and his maternal grandfather was a local shrimper who once owned restaurants himself.  Priester credits both his mother and grandmother for introducing him to his passion for fine Southern cooking.

Over the past 15 years, Priester honed his craft by attending the Culinary Institute of Charleston and training in some of the finest restaurant kitchens in Charleston.  Before leading the Southend culinary team, he was the sous chef at Amen Street Fish and Raw Bar, worked at the Saltus River Grill in Beaufort and an upscale restaurant on Seabrook Island. Priester’s culinary style is defined by Southern Gullah and French influences.  For Priester, the artistic presentation of each dish is just as important as the taste.  He said, “We eat with our eyes first.  When I’m creating a new dish, I visualize the finished product and then backtrack.”

Brew Master Brats created by Chef Priester and made with Keegan-Filion Farms Carolina garlic brats, sauteed peppers & onions, sea salt baked potatoes and whole grain mustard aioli

Priester plans to update the menu at Southend Brewery & Smokehouse to include more local ingredients and sustainable seafood from local purveyors.  Priester said, “I want the entire town reflected on the menu.  Charlestonians will appreciate and feel pride about the local influence in the dishes.  For tourists, I hope the menu will inspire them to learn more about the Lowcountry.  I want tourists to see, for example, an ingredient from a Johns Island Farm on the menu which will then encourage them to drive out and visit the farm and surrounding area.”

Longtime patrons of Southend Brewery can continue to expect their favorite classics such as pulled pork and brisquet on the menu, but Priester plans to introduce several new items over the next few months.  The new dishes will infuse the distinct brewery flavors of Southend’s signature beers and smokehouse feel such as Brew Master Brats made with local Keegan-Filion Carolina garlic brats. Priester’s excitement about the new menu was palpable, “There is no limit to what you can smoke-cook…seafood, pork, vegetables, absolutely anything.”

We can’t wait to sample all of Chef Priester’s fabulous creations!  Be sure to check our Chef’s Specials to see what is new this week.

Of course, no Labor Day weekend would be complete without a great, all-American burger.  Southend’s hand-pattied, 8 oz, Certified USDA Black Angus Burger delivers all the juicy flavor you look forward to on Labor Day.  Make it your own creation by adding one or more of these toppings: American or Swiss cheese, grilled onions, bacon, mushrooms or coleslaw.

Looking for the Southern cookout taste? We recommend our Carolina Slow Smoked BBQ Pork.  Served with fried pickles, Southern slaw and your choice of BBQ sauce, this sandwich offers the distinct Southern  flair to traditional American dining.

Our complete menu offers so many great American and Southern cuisine dishes, it will no doubt be hard to choose!  But, by all means, we highly recommend that you top off your meal with dessert. It’s ok to indulge…it’s a holiday!  Our Apple Crisp with Vanilla Ice Cream sounds absolutely perfect for Labor Day, doesn’t it?

Whether you are downtown during the day or evening to enjoy the sights, celebrations and festivities in Charleston, we look forward to celebrating with you at Southend Brewery!
