Heading to downtown for Labor Day weekend Charleston SC? Specializing in American cuisine and the best beer on tap in Charleston, Southend Brewery and Smokehouse is the perfect place to relax with friends and family!

The weather is calling for hot temperatures this weekend so, we are calling for cold beer at Southend.  Stop in and cool down from the heat with one of our signature  microbrews.  A staff and regular guest favorite, Love Me Two Times Blonde is golden, smooth, light and quite possibly the quintessential Summer brew.  Looking for something with a hint of citrus flavor?  Our Watch It Grow Wheat is ice cold, smooth, unfiltered and perfect for a hot day or balmy night.

Of course, no Labor Day weekend would be complete without a great, all-American burger.  Southend’s hand-pattied, 8 oz, Certified USDA Black Angus Burger delivers all the juicy flavor you look forward to on Labor Day.  Make it your own creation by adding one or more of these toppings: American or Swiss cheese, grilled onions, bacon, mushrooms or coleslaw.

Looking for the Southern cookout taste? We recommend our Carolina Slow Smoked BBQ Pork.  Served with fried pickles, Southern slaw and your choice of BBQ sauce, this sandwich offers the distinct Southern  flair to traditional American dining.

Our complete menu offers so many great American and Southern cuisine dishes, it will no doubt be hard to choose!  But, by all means, we highly recommend that you top off your meal with dessert. It’s ok to indulge…it’s a holiday!  Our Apple Crisp with Vanilla Ice Cream sounds absolutely perfect for Labor Day, doesn’t it?

Whether you are downtown during the day or evening to enjoy the sights, celebrations and festivities in Charleston, we look forward to celebrating with you at Southend Brewery!

Memorial Day Weekend Charleston SC at Southend Brewery

Posted in: Dining, Events
  |  by: Southend

Heading to Charleston SC for Memorial Day weekend?  With a three-day weekend, there’s a lot of fun to be had in the Holy City and right here at Southend Brewery & Smokehouse!  Come on by for the best beer in town, best American cuisine, great music, dancing and even beautiful artwork on display for Spoleto.  Whew! It’s a feast for the eyes, spirit and palate, friends!

Of course, we must start with the beer.  Its going to be a hot weekend and there’s nothing better than a cold beer for taking a break from walking around downtown. Since we hand-craft our own micro brews, we admit that it’s tough to choose just one beer.  We suggest our sample tray to get a taste of Brewmaster Ahren Warf’s amazing craft.  There’s always a new seasonal brew on tap as well as our most popular beers, Love Me Two Times Blonde and Castle Pinckney Pale Ale.

American cuisine is definitely a must this weekend.  We have a crazy amount of suggestions from our menu that are sure to please, but here’s a few of our staff’s favorites:

Can’t go wrong with a Certified USDA Black Angus Burger!  Cooked the way you like it, our mouth-watering burgers can be topped with your choice(s) of American or Swiss cheese, grilled onions, mushrooms, bacon or coleslaw.

Looking for a little Southern American?  Try our Carolina Slow Smoked BBQ Pork sandwich.  Served with fried pickles, Southern slaw and your choice of BBQ sauce, it is delicious.

Coming with a crowd?  Order a rack (or two or three…) of our BBQ Hickory Smoked Danish Baby Back Ribs.  Straight from our smokehouse grill, it’s all the best elements of a cookout without (you) doing the cooking…just sit back and enjoy!

A celebration is not a celebration without music and dancing.  On Friday night, The E.S.P. Trio takes the Southend stage at 7 p.m. and delivers the best light contemporary jazz in Charleston.  Looking to shake things up a bit this weekend ? Saturday nights always belong to  DJ Luigi’s Latin Groove at Southend Brewery. The dancing begins at 10:30 p.m., but come a little early if you’d like a quick lesson before hitting the floor.

This weekend also begins the annual Spoleto and Piccolo Spoleto festivals in Charleston.  One of the best times to be in Charleston, Spoleto features renowned artists, as well as, new talent in opera, theater, dance and visual arts.

This year, Southend Brewery is thrilled to celebrate the Spoleto season by hosting the artwork of local contemporary expressionist, Helen Duckworth.  Beginning Wednesday, May 30th, Ms. Duckworth’s gorgeous collection “Stories of the Heart” will be on display on the third floor of the brewery.  Vibrant and emotional, the collection celebrates the power of love and connection. It’s a must see!

We welcome locals and visitors alike to enjoy Memorial Day weekend with us at Southend Brewery!

Beautiful Renovations at Southend Brewery, Downtown Charleston

Posted in: Art, Bar, Dining, Events, Party
  |  by: Southend

A historic treasure, the Wagener Building on East Bay Street in downtown Charleston SC is home to Southend Brewery & Smokehouse. One of the alluring features of the Wagener Building is found on the third floor in the aptly named the Wagener Room, a space primarily used as a venue for special events and parties.

If you’ve been to Southend Brewery lately, you may have noticed a few changes to our Wagener Room.  If you haven’t stopped by in a while, we welcome you to come in and see how we’ve renovated the third floor with a facelift that both revitalizes its historic charm and provides modern conveniences.

Whether you take the stairs or our glass elevator to the third floor, without a doubt, the first thing that will catch your eye is the beautiful original pine wood floors. The same floors where the first Wagener Building occupants stood in the early 1880′s, have been restored with a glossy, shiny luster that makes you want to glide across them!

One of the best places in town to soak in the gorgeous views of the Charleston harbor and downtown city life, the Wagener Room is one of the most popular places to be in our brewery. Guests can better enjoy that famous view while sitting at our new bar which is now situated in the northwest corner of the room.  A full bar framed in beautiful exposed brick walls, patrons will find all our signature Southend microbrews on tap, as well as, our speciality cocktail and complete food menus.

While at the bar or sitting at one of our new tables, it is easy to enjoy a game on one of our six new 47 inch flat screen televisions placed around the room.  If you’d rather play than sit, walk to the opposite side of the room to enjoy a game of pool at one of our billiard tables.

One of the most significant benefits of moving the bar was that it allowed us to expand our dining area.  We can now accommodate 100 seated people in the room which makes the Wagener Room an even better venue for hosting private parties such as bridal showers, corporate events or birthday celebrations.  Depending on the size of the party, Southend provides dining options from our main menu or from our extensive catering menus.

One of the upcoming special events planned at the brewery will occur during Spoleto when Southend hosts the oil paintings of local artist, Helen Duckworth.  The new paint color on the walls of our third floor room was chosen specifically to highlight and showcase both Ms. Duckworth’s art, as well as, future local artists.

We welcome you to come in and see the beautiful renovations on our third floor!  When a private event is not booked, The Wagener Room is open to the public for dining, pool and drinking Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.  and Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 2 a.m.

To book an event in the Wagener Room or in the Bobby Jones Room on the second floor, please contact Southend Brewery Event Coordinator, Jana Hodge at   or .

Spoleto Festival Charleston Comes to Southend Brewery!

  |  by: Southend

"My Love" by Helen Ducksworth, 36×36 wraparound canvas, oil

Downtown Charleston, SC’s Spoleto Festival season comes to Southend Brewery & Smokehouse this year! We are delighted to host Charleston area artist and poet, Helen Duckworth, in our Wagener Room on the third floor of the brewery.  Ms. Duckworth’s ”Stories of the Heart” collection will be on display during the Spoleto season from May 30 – June 10, 2012.  We welcome both Charleston residents and visitors alike to come view this beautiful, romantic and vibrant collection.

“Stories of the Heart” features over twenty oil paintings gathered to represent an intimate expression of love.  Each original work captures deep emotion and soft touch whether it be between lovers or friends.  Set against the backdrop of historic Charleston with gorgeous views of the harbor, Southend’s Wagener Room is the perfect venue for Ms. Duckworth’s collection.  Along the staircase leading to the third floor, guests will be treated to the artist’s vignettes displayed with her original poetry.

Guests will have an opportunity to  meet Ms. Duckworth during a special reception on Saturday, June 2, 2012 between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Open to the public, the event is sponsored by Bits of Lace  and will include complimentary hors d’oeuvres, Southend’s signature beers and wine. We welcome everyone to come meet this talented artist and enjoy what is sure to be a lovely evening.

"My Dearest Love" by Helen Duckworth, 60×36, oil

A familiar face to the Spoleto Festival, Ms. Duckworth has participated twelve times in the annual arts event.  Area residents may have also met the artist during her poetry readings at the famous Dock Street Theatre.  Best described as contemporary expressionism, Ms. Duckworth’s paintings reflect the artist’s full range of emotions expressed through color and form.  Ms. Duckworth said, “I don’t use a formula when I paint.  It is intuitive.  I have a feeling of what I want to express and it evolves itself into shapes…like a puzzle that comes from me.”  In the paintings of lovers, the artist shows the feeling through the way the arms are exaggerated and how the hands sometimes barely touch their beloved.  In other paintings, the bodies appear to dissolve into each other.

Lowcountry Blues Bash Wrap-Up | Southend Restaurant Charleston SC

Posted in: Events, Local, Music
  |  by: Tungsten

Well, it’s been a fun few weeks at Southend Brewery Restaurant Charleston SC. As a venue for the annual Lowcountry Blues Bash, we welcomed a different blues artist each night during this two-week event. Blues greats from all over the Southeast set up shop on the Southend stage and played some awesome live music.  We heard Blues Bash founder Shrimp City Slim, Taj Majal-inspired Norman Taylor, Acoustic hippie-rockster Marshall Belew, pre-war blues player Lightnin’ Wells, just to name a few.

Our final performance comes from a Southend favorite, Jeff Beasley. He opened and closed the Bash at Southend with his own personal re-do’s of blues and rock classics on the guitar and harmonica. Even as a  Savannah resident, Jeff is a regular fixture on the Southend music scene and was obviously right at home on our stage.

The Lowcountry Blues Bash turned 21 this year. True to it’s party-time age, this year’s bash was one of our favorite festivals to date. In an interview with the Charleston City Paper, founder Gary Erwin said “I’m not sure where the time has gone, but my passion for this music has never waned, and the audience keeps growing. As Brownie McGhee said, ‘The blues is truth.’ Maybe in these difficult times, people need the truth more than ever!”

We agree and thank all the talented musicians who took the Southend stage. We and our beer-drinking, music-loving guests enjoyed getting the (good kind of) blues. We’re looking forward to next year already.

Really blue after the Blues Bash is over? Join us on Friday, February 24th for a live performance from our house jazz band, the E.S.P. Trio. Catch them at Southend Brewery from 7-10 pm.  Stay tuned for more music news. We promise to keep the good tunes rolling.

Southend Featuring Live Music in Downtown Charleston SC

Jimmy Fallon got himself a late night house band, and now we’ve got one, too. If you had the pleasure of hearing the sweet, live jazz sounds of the Charleston-based E.S.P. Trio this fall, you’ll be thrilled with this piece of news. Southend Brewery has invited the guys to be the official Southend Brewery house band.

With exception of just a few evenings this winter, the ESP Trio will play for Southend dinner and bar guests on Friday evenings. From 7-10 pm, the “Eclectic Soul Perspective” will take center stage and play some light contemporary jazz. Saxophonist Mike Quinn was a former Southend bartender, now returning to his old haunts this time joined by his pals, bass player David Grimm and drummer Jonathan Peace. The trio add some much-needed live music to the East Bay weekend bar scene.

When warmer temperatures make their way back to Charleston, we’ll open our floor-to-ceiling glass walls and let the music carry out to our outdoor seating.  In the meantime, come catch the guys inside on Southend Brewery’s first floor stage.

Grab a beer, microbrewed on site, create your own wood grilled pizza and get ready for a chill evening downtown.

Southend’s Goes Creole for Restaurant Week

With Restaurant Week less than week away, Charlestonians are poring over each and every Restaurant Week menu, drooling and frantically making reservations. There’s a reason why Charleston Restaurant Week is ten days long- there’s too much to taste in seven days. We are particularly excited to share our 3 for $20 menu, inspired by the spicy N’awlins lifestyle.

Long before settling in Charleston, Southend Brewery’s Executive Chef Greg Tatis cooked alongside famed Chef Paul Proudhomme at New Orleans K-Paul’s Louisiana Kitchen. After his first eight-year run in the south, he took his New Orleans education to New York and opened two restaurants for New Englanders craving creole cuisine. When Chef Tatis migrated back to the south, he landed at Southend Brewery in Charleston and brought along the spice and smoke of New Orleans cuisine. Hints of Cajun and Creole are woven throughout Southend’s menu, but next week, you’ll have a chance to taste the real deal.

French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and African cultures blend with traditional Southern soul food and bring us bright, spicy Creole flavors. On his Restaurant Week Menu, Chef Tatis features smoked or super spicy starters, classic Southern/Creole entrees and the perfect amount of chocolate to polish it off.  New Orleans is no stranger to drinking, and neither is Southend. Any of our house made microbrew beers or handcrafted cocktails make an excellent counterpart to our Restaurant Week Menu.

Make reservations with us for January 12-22nd, Charleston Restaurant Week! Happy eating.

Who says January has to be a downer? At Southend Brewery, we can’t wait to share what’s on tap for the first month of 2012.

We’re starting off the new year with a Latin Groove Salsa Saturday New Years Eve Party! For just a $10 cover charge at the door, you’ll enjoy $2.50 Southend drafts, an appetizer bar, a chance to win SEB gift certificates and a midnight champagne toast. DJ Luigi will rock the party with Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Reggaeton, and Top 40. You can party with us if you’re 18, but of course must be 21 to enjoy the bubbly. The party starts this Saturday night at 10:00 pm and rages on into the night. Beat the line and buy your ticket today.

Come back on Sunday morning to nurse your good-time hangover. Fill your belly with smoked BBQ sandwiches, build-your-own brick oven pizzas, and some hair of the dog handcrafted Bloody Mary or microbrewed beer. While you’re here you can scope out a front row seat for January’s full schedule of College Bowl games.

Mmm.. perfect hangover food

We’ve got the NFL Package on our first and third floor flat screen TV’s, ample seating and pitchers of icy cold beer. Grab your crew and hang out in downtown Charleston’s best college football viewing station. We’re wathing the Rose Bowl on Monday, January 2nd at 5 pm. Come early and stay late. Check out the schedule and drop in any time you’d like- we’ll tune in to any game for you.

And of course- we will soon reveal the menu for this winter’s Charleston Restaurant Week. Back by popular demand will be our 2 for $20 menu. The perfect solution to beating the winter blues. Make your dinner reservations now and enjoy the special from January 12-22nd.

Thanks for making 2011 one of Southend’s best years yet. We’ve loved sharing our brew, food and event space with you and look forward to bringing more fun in the new year.

Southend Brewery Caters Men’s Night on King Street

Last night, Southend Brewery had a front row spot for Men’s Night at Bits of Lace and Croghan’s Jewel Box. We shared selections from our catering menu with a crowd of hungry shoppers and poured glass after glass of wine and champagne. King Street was alive with a festive feel, each storefront window lit up with white lights and an unusually warm “winter” breeze blowing. Men’s Night has become one of our favorite events on King Street. For all the men who enjoyed their hors d’ oeuvres: visit Southend for more.

On the menu were chicken satay skewers with peanut sauce, cheeseburger sliders, a fruit spread and a delicious artisan cheese platter complete with Buttermilk Bleu, Vintage Van Gogh Gouda, Gruyere and more.

While Southend Brewery is known for hosting parties in our second and third floor event space, we are also available for off-site party catering. Whether you take a food spread to go or host an event at the restaurant, our menu is extremely customizable. We can provide appetizers and small bites like these, or prepare a three-course, sit down meal. Contact our Event Coordinator Jana Hodge () for pricing and a detailed menu.

If you need a last minute party spot this holiday season, we still have a few open dates for our gorgeous event space! It’s not too late to pull together an awesome party in December or in the new year. Check our event calendar for availability.

Reindeer Run Recap

Blue skies and mild temperatures made the perfect morning for last Saturday’s Reindeer Run. We at Southend Brewery welcomed hundreds of runners, walkers and dogs into the restaurant for some beer, appetizers and merriment as the official Reindeer Run After-Party destination.

This is one of our favorite days of the year. We just can’t get enough of the santa beards, elf ears and Christmas tree costumes. It’s actually pretty amazing some people are even able to move- let alone run a 5K in some of these get-ups.

See Southend in the midst of Santas, reindeers and runners in this great video. Thanks to The Footstore  for documenting the morning! Charleston Magazine and Charleston Scene captured some hilarious photos.

The official results haven’t been posted, but keep checking the official Reindeer Run site for updates.
